CLUBFITTING & EQUIPMENT CUSTOMIZATION

Why Get Fit?
Many of our customers ask us a simple question when they seek out our fitting services. Why get fit? One of the most used analogies of golf club fitting is the comparison of buying a suit off the rack compared to a tailor fitting a suit to the individual. This analogy is apt for several reasons. For a proper fit suit there are so many measurements that need to be taken even before any consideration of the material involved, which can alter the cost dramatically. The same can be said of golf clubs, especially in the year 2010. With the OEMs (original equipment manufacturers, ie. Callaway, Taylor Made etc.) releasing new product every six months how does a golfer decipher what equipment is best for their game? Secondly with all the available options how can the golfer be assured these clubs are tailored to fit their individual specification needs. The seasoned professionals at Sheets Design Group will guide you through the fitting process to ensure you play only golf clubs that fit your swing and physical traits.

The fitting sessions and subsequent golf club alterations are set up to duplicate the precision and quality service that a PGA Tour Pro gets while out on Tour. The fitting protocol is detailed and comprehensive to ensure the golfer is fit to the correct equipment and specifications for their individual swing. Each fitting session is focused on the physical attributes and ability of the golfer and defining their exact needs in golf equipment. Whether fine tuning the current lineup of golf clubs or creating anew, the team at Sheets Design Group has the experience to fit the Tour Player or those with higher handicaps.

Putter Fitting  $75  45-60 minutes

Benefits:

  • Improved consistency
  • Improved hand-eye coordination and control
  • Reduced ball skid/quicker over-spin
  • Better grip comfort
  • Greater confidence at setup

Fitting Philosophy:

The putter can account for up to 45% of your score. The easiest way to lower your handicap and reduce your total strokes is to eliminate the number of putts per round. For some, distance control is the issue and for others it’s their direction. For an unfortunate few, both direction and distance hamper their scoring opportunities. As with the other clubs in the bag finding the appropriate style of putter is key to cementing a confident, repeatable stroke. First we look at your swing path with the putter. Is your swing path straight back and straight through or is there a natural arc in your stroke. Identifying the type of stroke and selecting the correct style of putter is a major part of the fitting process. Most golfers have an idea of what they are trying to do with the stroke but often their body moves the putter in a different manner than their brain directs. Next, we make sure the putter is the correct length for your body’s build and set up. At Sheets Design Group we have found most golfers use putters that are too long and a simple length adjustment is necessary. As with the standard putter lengths imposed from the golf industry, the majority of putters sold employ the industry average 3° of loft. Depending on your set up and stance you may require more or less loft in order to get the ball rolling smoothly on the green. A putter with too little or excessive loft will cause the ball to hop, skid or bounce which directs the ball off line yielding poor results. Finding the proper loft is paramount to imparting a true roll which is determined by examining the golfer’s set up and putting style. The putter’s balance and heft are fitting issues which are rarely addressed in mainstream fitting but are part of the package at Sheets Golf Design. Many golfers have excelled when supplied with heavier putter shafts or by adding weight to the butt end of the putter. Finally by watching your stroke with experienced eyes we often recommend non traditional grip styles and sizes to help quiet the hands during the stroke. When you leave your Putter Fitting session you will not only have the putter specifications that will allow you to putt freely, confident and accurately but you will have a full understanding of the mechanics involved in putting as well.

Iron Fitting     $150  1-2 hours

Benefits:

  • Tighter shot consistency (accuracy)
  • Improved distance control
  • Reduced shot deviation (bad shots)
  • Improved club feel and shot feedback
  • Greater confidence at setup

Fitting Philosophy:

Irons are the key to scoring in any round of golf. They generate birdie putts and also yield potential stroke savers when the tee ball puts you in trouble. Besides the putter the irons are hit more often than any other club in the bag. They should be precise in accuracy and distance, and be swung as effortlessly on the eighteenth hole as they were on the first. Since every golfer has different physical abilities, tempo and swingspeed it is important to find the correct weight and flex of shaft that suits each individual’s swing. A golfer should not have to work too hard to get the shafts to deliver wanted results. After all golf is a game and work should never be part of the golfing equation. Because of the uniqueness of every golfer’s swing, equally important is sizing the golfer up for the correct head type. Some golfers launch it low, some hit it high, a few hit the middle of the club with every shot while others struggle to find the center of the clubface a few times a round. At Sheets Golf Design we will recommend a head that will help each golfer hit their desired shot and yield expected results. An important part of the Iron Fitting session is determining the proper length for your irons. Obviously club length is crucial to being comfortable over each and every shot during the round. Depending on your posture, height and flexibility a length adjustment may be in order. Subsequently a lie angle fitting session determines the horizontal angle of the clubhead, allowing the golfer to hit shots where they are aimed and permit the sole of the clubhead to slide effortlessly through the turf with zero heel or toe drag resulting in a pure feel at impact. A simple test will help us determine how many irons are necessary for your set makeup. We will also recommend the best solutions for filling in distance gaps where irons have been removed. Finally we will utilize or unique grip sizing system to make sure your hands are comfortable and working in unison with the golf club to product accurate, exacting golf shots. Your new set will allow you to focus on the shot at hand with confidence and allow your body to swing effortlessly all day.

Driver Fitting  $100  1-1.5 hour

Benefits:

  • Maximize driving distance
  • Minimize side-spin (improved accuracy)
  • Fine tune launch conditions (launch angle, spin rate, trajectory shape)
  • Inspire confidence on the tee box

Fitting Philosophy:

Nothing strikes more fear in the mind of the golfer than the first tee ball on the first hole of any round of golf. “Do I have it today?” is a common thought as one begins their round. From touring professional to the weekend dew sweeper this driver phobia is universal. Why is that? Perhaps it is the driver’s club length most of us are faced with. The average name brand driver has grown over three inches in the last fifteen years while the average iron has increased in length by barely a half inch. Large volume heads and light shafts seam to allow golfers to swing with more confidence, but their extra club length hampers more golfers more than it helps. At Sheets Design Group we will disdain the hype and let the Driver Fitting results dictate the specifications. As most driver heads are between 420 and 460cc in volume, in appearance, they differ only slightly. But each driver model has its own DNA, the DNA being the center of gravity location within the head. Fitting is the art and science of determining how the GOG reacts dynamically during the swing when fitted with different shafts. Some driver heads are designed to launch the ball into the stratosphere while others are meant to keep the ball low while imparting a minimum amount of spin. Fitting the driver head and subsequently the shaft design is based on your swing speed, acceleration, tempo, angle of attack and launch angle. How often you find the clubface’s center with the golf ball will impact the choice of driver model as well. The Driver Fitting will incorporate finding the correct length club to garner the highest swing speed while making sure center face ball contact is not sacrificed. Should directional tendencies be an issue we can provide specific club head models which will help the golfer find the center of the fairway more often. Finally our unique grip sizing will allow for positive hand to grip feel in order to deliver control, accuracy, distance and confidence.

Distance Gapping  $150 1-1.5 hour

Benefits:

  • Tighter shot consistency (accuracy)
  • Improved distance control
  • Reduced shot deviation (bad shots)
  • Improved club feel and shot feedback
  • Confidence in club selection

Fitting Philosophy:

Why do people ask another player what they just hit on a par three? The two player’s swings are different, their irons are not the same type and their abilities are not even close, yet they attempt to hit the same club as their golfing partner. How far an iron carries is based on the relationship of golf club loft, club length, the type of iron and shaft used and finally how fast the club head moves through the impact area. Many golfers know and set their loft angles to specific numbers to ensure an exact distance difference between each iron in the bag. As they play they get an idea of how accurate these distances really are. Some golfers re-adjust their lofts to regulate this difference in distance while other golfers have no clue how far their irons really fly. Distance Gapping will teach the golfer how the distance or each iron and any roll. Using the FlightScope launch monitor and the golfer’s ball of choice, the distance of each iron is mapped. If necessary the loft of the iron is adjusted until the exact expected yardage is attained. Distance Gapping is extremely valuable for the short irons and wedges but will also help the golfer understand the distance relationship between long irons and hybrids. A bonus to the Distance Gapping is making sure the each iron‘s lie angle is correct and not affecting the accuracy of the ball flight. Imagine going to the course with a yardage notebook to consult, much like a tour player does with their caddie, and having the irons fly their prescribed distance. When the pressure is on or exact distance is crucial there will be no more second guessing how far an iron will fly.

Hybrid/long Iron  $100  1-1.5 hour

Benefits:

  • Eliminate bad performing irons
  • Improved distance control in the 160 – 220 yard range
  • Reduced shot deviation (bad direction)
  • Improve mid-to-long distance accuracy
  • Inspire greater confidence with 160 – 220 yard shots

Fitting Philosophy:

Ever wonder why the three iron is so difficult to hit? Let's look at the golf ball first. Golfers are playing a golf ball that is less likely to lift into the air due to lack of spin compared to the ball of twenty years ago. Now look at the actual loft of the clubhead. In most cases it is equivalent to a one iron of twenty years ago. And we all know what Lee Trevino said about the one iron, don't we. In any case most golfers lose all their confidence when it is time to hit their long irons. How about a hybrid? Finding the specific hybrid to replace those unwanted long irons can be as difficult as Chinese algebra. Even television commentators seem vague about hybrids. They can tell you much more than you will ever want to know about the specifications of a six iron being hit, but when it comes to the hybrid it is just a "little hybrid club". If they are confused, how should you feel? Hybrids vary in club length, shaft weight, tip diameter, size and appearance. In most cases you have a better chance at winning the lottery than finding the hybrid best suited for your game. The experts at Sheets Design Group have the answers you need to bring the confidence back into your swing on those long par threes and the 200 yarder from the fairway. Because we design golf clubs as well as fit them we have the knowledge to guide you through this unknown territory to the road of long distance success. By determining your swing consistency, physical attributes and golf course diversity we will fit the long end of the bag into an area where you won't shake with fear as you decide which club to hit. With your help, decisions about where the long irons end and where the hybrids begin will be made. By using the FlightScope launch monitor the long end of the bag will be fit like it was your wedges. Each club will yield expected distances with a potential gain of accuracy. After your Hybrid/Long Iron Fitting you will filled with confidence and beg to see those 200+ yard par threes.

Wedge Fitting  $100   1-1.5 hour

Benefits:

  • Improve accuracy from 100 yards and in
  • Improved distance control with all wedges
  • Improved club feel and shot feedback
  • Expand repertoire of greenside shots
  • Greater confidence in scoring

Fitting Philosophy:

How is it that some golfers are wizards from the sand while others are just a backhoe. Why do some golfers hit every wedge fat while others can pick a ball of the hardpan as if they were sitting up perfectly in the fairway? One simple word- bounce. The bounce of an iron head is the angle of the sole as it moves from the leading edge to the rear of the club head. If the bounce angle is incorrect for your type of sand or your style of bunker play then it matters not how much practice you put in, the results will always be poor. Gauging the correct bounce for the wedges is as an important specification as the loft of the club head. The bounce angle dictates how the sole of the club head moves through sand, grass and hard pan. With a Wedge Fitting from Sheets Design Group, bounce is just one of the specifications that is measured and adjusted for your swing. Often a simple bounce adjustment on a loft and lie machine will erase years of bad memories. At the same time a game plan is drawn up about the style of courses you play, course conditions, types of sand, how many wedges you might need and what loft angles they need to be in order to produce wanted distances. We also look at the continuity of each wedge and their compatibility with each other. By examining shaft type and weight, total club weight, swingweight, grip style and size, a prescription for wedge and short game success is written. We also make sure the wedges are compatible with the short irons so that full shot fairway distances flow seamlessly through the bag.

Set Evaluation: Club Specifications Check and Adjustment  $100  1-1.5 hour
(includes iron and putter bend)

Most golfers in 2010 have at least three different brands of golf clubs in their bag. This often leads to inconsistent play because the specifications of one or more clubs are often at odds with others in the bag. We will measure the specifications of the favorite clubs in the bag and as well as the not so favorites and see what the differences are. Recommendations for club continuity will be prescribed. Additionally all clubs will be measured for loft angle, lie angle, club length, swingweight, total weight, shaft flex and grip size. Based on the findings we will adjust loft and lie angle on any iron out of specification as well as the putter if necessary, to create consistent distance differences and clean sole to turf contact. A perfect way to create harmony within the golf bag and release those clubs that are not conducive to good play.
